San Luis Obispo, CA (Round 2) 08/08/2012

Yesterday got off to a rough start (literally). My buddy, Adam, and I paddled out at his home break in Los Osos, CA for a late morning session in what appeared to be sloppy wind swell with a few pick and choose corners out there. It was more of an exercise in paddle endurance than surfing as we battled seemingly endless rows of white water on the way to the line up. I caught a few decent rides after making it outside, then made the mistake of riding one too far inside and, consequently, paid the piper for more than 30 minutes or so trying to stroke my way out back. At that point, it seemed as though it was time to call it quits to find some tacos and a nap!
Later on in the afternoon, I made my way to my next performance at Upper Crust Trattoria in San Luis Obispo, CA. I was the first act and kicked things off for two really great artists: Girls & Boys from San Francisco, CA and then Emily Wryn from Lompoc, CA. The event was part of the Songwriters at Play showcase series that local promoter and singer/songwriter Steve Key puts on every week up and down the Central Coast of California. It was a ton of fun and a really intimate show in a neat space. Definitely check out these two artists when you have time. Girls & Boys called to mind a softer side of The Civil Wars, while Emily Wryn played a style that, honestly, made me think of that female, LA, singer/songwriter sound, but in the end, seemed all her own. It was a pretty neat mix of music for the night.
This evening, Thursday, August 9th, I’ll be continuing on down the road to perform in Arroyo Grande, CA at SLO Down Pub as part of my last Songwriters at Play showcase series this trip. I’ll be playing the featured showcase set tonight at around 8:00pm, but the music kicks off at 6:30pm with a variety of local and touring artists, including a few tunes by host, Steve Key.
